AFGE News Release on OIG Report on DOD Outsourcing (12/9/02)
Yes, you have read these articles correctly! President Bush wants to contract up to 850,000 (half) of the 1.7 million civilian jobs! Those jobs are hardly just jobs involving cutting lawns or cleaning buildings...Many will involve sensitive duties involving accessing federal government computer systems, files, data... Just some of the jobs these contractors hold in INS involve guarding detained aliens, accessing and updating INS files and INS databases, etc. For those who wish to engage in wrongdoing and assist criminals and terrorists, this access makes it convenient to possibly change and/or purge information from our files, change data and/or input someone as a lawful permanent resident or citizen (naturalized), etc. What is most disturbing of all, is that contractors and their employees are normally NOT subject to the same requirements and full blown background checks that federal employees are! If this occurs, the terrorism we are fearing may very well come "from within".
